“If she were a chef, her spice cabinet would need restocking daily. Mary Ellen Bernard seasons her material to taste, and cooks with a high flame.” – Mark Keating, Sound Views

“[One of] the ten best albums of 1996 that you’ve probably never heard of (but should have).” – Steve Bornstein, Mixx Magazine

The nostalgic title track, written by Paul Guzzone, was featured in the WLIW (PBS) documentary “Brooklyn Best.”

This album serves up slinky blues vocals, roadhouse rock, shimmering ballads, and rich storytelling, plus a trace of Mary Ellen’s trademark humor. A highlight is her interpretation of the haunting “Like Stardust,” a collaboration between playwright Lanford Wilson and actor Jonathan Hogan, which the artist feels privileged to have recorded.

Produced by Paul Guzzone.

The Big Idea + -
(by Mary Ellen Bernard & Paul Guzzone) Mama always said, "If you want to go far Remember, you gotta to stick to it! You gotta look straight ahead and work real hard, And little by little, you can do it. Papa always said, "Listen to your ma," As he bet the house on his dreams. Spec deals on oil fields and real-estate scams And wild pyramid schemes. Cause little by little was a lifetime too slow. He was lookin' for that big idea. Everybody's lookin' for that big idea, Make a killing in the market Sell that screen play in the drawer. Everybody's lookin', but they don't know what for. They're just lookin' for that Big Idea. The Bible says in Heaven you will find your reward As long as you believe And most believe it's good to give But far better to receive. Cause little by little is a lifetime too slow. We’re all lookin' for that Big Idea. Everybody's lookin' for that big idea, Make a killing in the market Sell that screen play in the drawer. Everybody's lookin', but they don't know what for. They're just lookin' for that Big Idea. Everybody's lookin' for the big idea, Be a movie mogul hot shot, a scene-stealer Get a government grant, start a government coup. Be on the cover of Time, no matter what you do. We got Einsteins, Bernsteins and Lichtensteins We got baby-boom millionaires and disco queens. We got politician Rhodes scholars, Oil sheiks in Arrow collars piling up those Euro-dollars From Micro chips, Stock tips, Pet rocks, Heated socks, Hula Hoops, Pooper scoops, Darth Vader, Schwarzenegger Big Macs, AWACs, Prozac, Finger snacks, Velco, Food to-go, Jello with Sweet 'n' Low, Boob jobs, Lube jobs, Pac-Man, Disneyland, Airbags, FAX-sending, Patents pending never-ending. We're all lookin' for that big idea. Everybody's lookin' for that big idea, Make a killing in the market Sell that screen play in the drawer. Everybody's lookin', but they don't know what for. They're just lookin' for that Big Idea. © 1996 Mary Ellen Polentz & Paul Guzzone (BMI) All rights controlled & administered by Triple Z, Inc.
This 'N' That + -
(by Paul Guzzone & Arlene Jaffe) Everybody needs a little now and then How long has it been, I can’t remember when I think it’s time to readjust my thermostat With a little this ‘n that. Everybody wants a little to and fro How long has it been, well, I don’t really know No, I don’t need a superstar or an acrobat Just a little this ‘n that. ‘Cause that makes me feel good And this makes me bad And yes, I miss all of this and that makes me sad But I could be happier in nothing flat With a little this ‘n that. Everybody likes a little here and there How long has it been, do you really care I think I’ll go on patrol down at the laundromat Find a little this ‘n that. ‘Cause that makes me crazy And this makes me bold And yes, I miss all of this and that makes me old But I could be young again in nothing glat With a little this ‘n that. Just a little this ‘n that. I need a little this ‘n that. © 1996 Arlene Jaffe & Paul Guzzone (BMI)
Coney Island Mojo + -
(by Paul Guzzone) Don’t worry, Baby, everything is gonna be all right. This city can make you crazy, but we don’t have to fight. I know we don’t have much money but there’s something we can do. Just come with me I’ll make your Brooklyn dreams come true. I’ve been workin’ on my Coney Island mojo. You’ve just got to believe it’s true. Coney Island mojo. It’s the magic of me and you together. We can go back in time and make a new start. It’s calling to you straight from my heart. Nothing can touch us When we’re high on top of the Wonder Wheel. And everything looks so much better than it does in the real world, Baby. I’ll conjure up the spirits of Dreamland, Steeplechase and Luna Park. They’ll carry us away from this day-to-day madness when they come out after dark. I’ve been workin’ on my Coney Island mojo. You’ve just got to believe it’s true. Coney Island mojo. It’s the magic of me and you together. We can go back in time and make a new start. It’s calling to you straight from my heart. Calling to you straight from my heart. Calling to you straight from my heart. Calling to you straight from my … Hearts filled with hope and wonder find a home in this place. They come for a chance and one last dance before they disappear without a trace. We can go back in time and make a new start. It’s calling to you straight from my heart. The Duke of Dutchess County + -
(by Paul Guzzone) Some people run away for adventure Some people hit the road just to run away Once I hopped a train with The Duke of Dutchess County. He was working his way back home. They say he shot a man they call “The Prince.” He’s been the Duke of Dutchess ever since. Don’t try to steal a girl from The Duke of Dutchess County You won’t find your way back home. He said that he’d been travelin’ with no destination First time in his life he’d been on his own. So I bought a drink for The Duke of Dutchess County Who can’t find his way back home. Once he owned the side of a mountain, But he bet the deed on a poker hand. A stranger called his bluff, now The Duke of Dutchess County Can’t find his way back home. He said that he’d been travelin’ with no destination First time in his life he’d been on his own. So I bought a drink for The Duke of Dutchess County Who can’t find his way back home. He still had that fire in his eyes Oh, but there’s a sadness deep inside. He said: “If you want to know why I always find adventure.... It’s cause I can’t find my way back home.” He said that he’d been travelin’ with no destination First time in his life he’d been on his own. So let’s raise a glass to The Duke of Dutchess County Who can’t find his way back home. He can’t find his way back home He can’t find his way back home. © 1996 Paul Guzzone (BMI) All rights controlled & administered by Triple Z, Inc.
Blue Caribbean Waltz + -
(by Paul Guzzone) If I were a sailor then he’d be the mast holding steady and straight in the wind. And if I were in danger, then he’d be the welcoming lighthouse guiding me in. Now, I am no angel, but I do believe the devil will never take me. I am no sailor, but I do believe that these currents will bring him to me. ‘Cause there’s nothing as peaceful as the breeze on the water or as soft as the sea doves’ calls. Won’t you come take my hand and we’ll dance in the sand to the blue Caribbean waltz. Sometimes I feel like this island, the ocean side wide, the inlets are calm. But I know the day that I find him I’ll never wander. I’ll do him no harm. Now, I am no angel, but I do believe the devil will never take me. But I am a poet and I do believe that these currents will bring him to me. ‘Cause there’s nothing as peaceful as the breeze on the water or as soft as the sea doves’ calls. Won’t you come take my hand and we’ll dance in the sand to the blue Caribbean waltz. © 1996 Paul Guzzone (BMI) All rights controlled & administered by Triple Z, Inc.
Traded Dreams + -
(by Mary Ellen Bernard) She was gonna go East, be the pride of the family, a healer of souls was what she would be. Then she got waylaid by a promise to marry. So she traded her dreams for a color TV. See, John had a business he got from his dad. He offered the comfort of a life worry-free. And there’s nothin’ so tempting as a bird in the hand. So she traded her dreams for a color TV. But it wasn’t the baby, It wasn’t the man, It wasn’t the world That defeated her plan. It was only her fear. And now she can’t see why she traded her dreams for a color TV. She looks in the mirror. Her eyes are half-empty. It was so long ago. She was just twenty-three. She was too young to know just what she’d be missing when she traded her dreams for a color TV. But it wasn’t the baby, It wasn’t the man, It wasn’t the world That defeated her plan. It was only her fear. And now she can’t see why she traded her dreams for a color TV. Now she’s watching Oprah and reading the tabloids Living her life in a lost fantasy. She’s clipping out coupons and waiting for sun-up, all by the light of that color TV. And she looks at her child a small blue-eyed wonder as the girl settles down upon her knee. She says: “Listen darlin’, whatever you do, don’t you trade in your dreams for no color TV.” ‘Cause it won’t be the baby, It won’t be the man, It won’t be the world That defeats all your plans. It’ll just be your fear. And then there you’ll be – with a lifetime of dreams and a color TV.” © 1996 Mary Ellen Polentz (BMI) All rights controlled & administered by Triple Z, Inc.
The Diaper Rag + -
(by Mary Ellen Bernard & Paul Guzzone) Recently my friends have felt Their maternal needs must be satisfied. And while they’re busy passing on their genes They wonder why I haven’t tried. Now I appreciate the art of procreatin’ And the joys of reproduction. But if you ask me, when baby makes three, That’s a long way to go for a tax deduction. You come home with a baby The family makes a fuss. And then before you know it Junior’s screwed up just like us. You finally reacquaint yourself with your lovin spouse. Then the kids get out of college Move right back into your house. Ain’t got no food in my hair. Ain’t got those gummy little pacifiers all over the house. And I ain’t bakin’ no birthday cakes -- that look like Mickey Mouse. I get plenty of sleep And I watch what I want on my own TV. Ain’t got no little girls around who are ten times cuter than me. Now I don’t have to force anyone To drink their milk and eat their greens. And I don’t have to preach about The dangers of wearing tight blue jeans. And I don’t have to listen to Raffi tapes Or baby-proof all my drawers. But If I ever feel the need to have a kid around Well, I can always borrow yours. Ain’t got no food in my hair. Ain’t got those gummy little pacifiers all over the house. And I ain’t bakin’ no birthday cakes -- that look like Mickey Mouse. I get plenty of sleep And I watch what I want on my own TV. Ain’t got no little kids around who are ten times cuter than me. [Talking bridge] © 1996 Mary Ellen Polentz & Paul Guzzone (BMI) All rights controlled & administered by Triple Z, Inc.
